The short answer

Written notice with a mailing date is harder to dispute than a text. Send it First-Class for $0.99 all-in, add tracking for $0.99, or send it Certified for $12.99 if you need a USPS record. Most leases require written notice to end a tenancy — a verbal or texted heads-up can be disputed later. A mailed notice gives you a date-stamped record that you told your landlord in writing, on a specific day.

Giving a 30-day notice to your landlord

Thirty days is the most common notice period for a month-to-month tenancy, though your lease or state law may require more. Whatever the period, mail your 30-day notice with enough lead time that the postmark date — not the date your landlord happens to open it — clearly satisfies the deadline.

What to include

  • Your rental address and the date you will vacate.
  • The notice period your lease requires (30 days is common for month-to-month).
  • A request for the final walk-through and the deposit refund address.

How it works

  • Edit the template and confirm the landlord's address.
  • Pay $0.99 for First-Class, or add tracking for $0.99 — or send Certified ($12.99) for a signature record.
  • We print the next business day; your file is deleted 30 days after delivery.

This template is not legal advice. Confirm the notice period your lease and local law require, and send it with enough lead time to avoid rent for a partial month.

Questions before you send

Why not go to the post office myself?

You can. paperplane does not replace the post office; it replaces the trip. USPS still carries the letter. What you skip is the printer, the envelope, the stamp and the walk to a mailbox. $0.99 covers all of it.

If something goes wrong, do I pay?

If we cannot mail the letter, the hold on your card is released and you are not charged. If a letter fails after your card is charged, you are refunded automatically and in full.

Why give notice in writing?

Most leases require written notice to end the tenancy, and a paper trail protects you if the landlord later claims you did not give proper notice. A mailed letter gives you a date-stamped record.

How much notice should I give?

Check your lease. Thirty days is common for month-to-month tenancies; fixed-term leases sometimes require more. The template lets you state the exact days.

How much does it cost?

$0.99 all-in for First-Class: printing, envelope, and USPS postage, with tracking available for an extra $0.99.
